special moments. so we look forward to seeing them all today. it is 11 minutes past the hour. bermuda is bracing for hurricane leslie. category 1 storm could pass the eye wland this weekend. and people are being told to prepare for the worst. it is already bringing dangerous swells an currents to coastal areas of the island and here in the united states, the east coast is not out of play either. so let's get right to alexandra steel. she is at cnn hurricane headquarters. what can you tell us? >> it's not as bad as it could be for bermuda. bermuda sees hurricanes about three every ten years and it's moving farther east than we'd seen it before. this is the atlantic. we do have two hurricanes at play. there's leslie. here is michael. this is a category 2, it is small, tight, powerful. 105-mile-an-hour winds. good news, won't affect anyone, won't affect land. so with that, our attention turns to leslie. now, right now it's category 1, maximum sustained winds at 75 miles an hour. what's happened is it has sat over the same space, kind of the cold water for the last 18 hours or so. so we h

and talk about hurricane leslie which is this massive cloud you see here. it's heading to bermuda and is intensifying and is expected to be a category 2 storm before it moves over bermuda for the time being. it's moving slowly and erratically at the moment, but is generating strong winds which in turn generate sea swells which affect bermuda and the northern leeward islands and virgin islands and puerto rico. that's something to be cautious of near the water. dangerous rip currents could result. we have a low sitting here towards the eastern gulf of mexico coast, and this one looks like it could develop. we're seeing some showers here towards florida, but this one certainly looks like it could intensify. just keeping a close on eye on it into thursday today. meanwhile heavy rain from the mid-atlantic up through eastern canada. we'll see a few thunderstorms in that, too, and pretty intense thunderstorms through the great lakes region into the lower mississippi valley. illinois and indiana looks like they get the worst of it today. we talk about damaging winds and the potential of h
. tropical storm leslie has just passed by bermuda and will continue to cause high surf and rip tides. jim cantori is watching this storm from bermuda tonight. >> reporter: it has been a very rainy day. this area is about 12 inches down in rainfall. we just got word from the national security minister that he is giving bermuda the all-clear in terms of having no injuries and no major structural damage. leslie is still a big storm and will make its way to canada. this thing has about a 200-mile wide tropical storm windfield. even though it missed us by 140 miles we were still within 60 miles of the tropical storm force winds. the path takes it to the north and east and on tuesday it could still become a minimal hurricane. folks in st. johns will probably see watches and warnings come out later on this evening. here we are almost at the exact peak date of the atlantic hurricane season and we have leslie, michael and the next disturbance. some of the long range computer models don't take the next disturbance anywhere near land. we are only half way through the season. we will see what else mo

of leslie. here we have hamilton in bermuda. this is going to be impacted by leslie throughout the day although the storm is likely to track off the east. you can see how they're getting a lot of the outer bands from the storm. also strong winds. winds reported up to 50 to 60 miles per hour possible today. leslie likely to track up north. maybe strengthening back into a hurricane as she continues north over the waters. as for hurricane michael, still a category two, likely to decrease strength as he stays out in the open atlantic. fortunately, we're not expecting any impact to the u.s. with these two storms. the one thing we have to watch for today is bermuda, as leslie passes by. all the clouds along the coast, the clearing out towards the west, this is going to be a very nice we wither this pattern coming in through the next couple days. right now high pressure is building in in its place. but we still have a lot of clouds associated with the upper low. that's going to bring some rain showers to the western mountains. there's a second reinforcing cold front moving in to the east. tha
could be dealing with a hurricane here. it is en route to bermuda. that could create a problem next week. for the time being, though, the only thing to mention to be careful of is that you'll be noticing some problems maybe in the sea and then to puerto rico as well. we're talking about rough seas, sea swells, and rip currents here. it's going to move away from land masses at the moment. we'll see what's happening with bermuda. other tropical activity today, a tropical depression has formed to the west of mexico. that is bringing thunderstorms to the coast. it's moving out further towards the west. so those conditions should improve to the next 24 to 48 hours. then we have isaac. now, isaac made landfall in the gulf coast last week as a hurricane. now it is just ambling its way through the east. so the tennessee valley and also the lower mississippi valley, you could see some thunderstorms today. they could get nasty. about 50 millimeters of rain in a 24 hour period isn't out of the question. it's going to slowly make its way towards the atlantic coast. a lot of rain in the southeast. th

. this is the one we've been tracking over the last couple of days south of bermuda. this is the one we'll have to watch impacting bermuda and the canadian maritime over the next five days. as far as the east coast goes, we're actually safe from leslie. the cold front that's heading off the coast will keep this storm off to our east, but it will grow potentially if the category 2 hurricane. it's going to send huge waves to the east coast. it looks like monday will be the closest it will get to cape maine. it could cross through the canadian maritime. it will be in a weakening state but they still have to prepare. the other thing we have to watch for is possible tropical trouble in the gulf. slow development is possible off the louisiana coastline. it's not where we want to see anything that. would be very slow development. so the forecast for today, very hot in texas once again. a few storms around kansas city and missouri and also right through the carolinas and atlanta. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. showers and thunderstorms a g
